The Pheasant Bar

There’s nothing better then to unwind in The Pheasant bar with a pint and a chat – you can solve almost everything!

Charlie Ross – Valued customer

Our hotel bar is the most famous and well known bar in the Lake District – it is full of local character and characters some of whom are very knowledgeable and opinionated! The décor and furnishings are unique and are a mix and match of days gone bye. The unrepeatable colour of the walls and ceiling a combination of cigarette smoke (thankfully no longer present), yacht varnish and gentle ageing. Edward H. Thompson (1879 – 1949) the well known Cumbrian artist bartered for beer in the bar and two of his lake district scenes hang here to this day.

Intimate, cosy, unique, and atmospheric are just some of the adjectives that spring to mind to describe the wonderful bar at The Pheasant – some just come for a quiet pint!

The Beers

Hawkshead Red - 4.2% ABV is a red ale for those who like to taste the malt as well as the hops in beer. The colour comes from dark crystal malt. It is malty, spicy and bitter sweet with a long dry finish and an easy drinking strength of 4.2%.

Bluebird Bitter - 3.6% ABV “Light Golden amber with full head. Particularly hoppy spicy session bitter, refreshing and understated. Nicely balanced maltiness with a fresh barley note. An outstanding bitter. ”

Corby Ale - 3.8% ABV “Pleasant fresh, hoppy aroma, but not overpowering. Creamy mouthfeel, which lingers on the tongue. On closer inspection, a very, very faint smokiness come sout in the back of the throat. A really well balanced brew and a superb first beer form this new micro.”

The Wine List

After tasting, slurping and spitting (non compulsory) our way through dozens of different wines we are confident that our current wine list is our best effort yet. In keeping with our “buy local where possible” policy we source all of our wines from a totally independent wine merchant based in Cumbria. They have been established for twenty five years and have superb contacts throughout the wine world, particularly with smaller, quality conscious growers whose wines are often just that little bit more interesting. So why not follow the link below and enjoy browsing through our new selection.

Our Spirits

We are well known for our great range of single malts and with over 50 it may take more than one visit to sample them all! The classics sit alongside some more unusual options and with a comprehensive set of tasting notes to help you navigate through the list you`ll be sure to find the perfect malt for your enjoyment!

With a few members of our senior staff being more than a little partial to a drop of G&T, we put together a list to show that there is more to life than Gordons and Bombay! Showcasing Gins from all around the world (and right on our doorstep) our selection gives an insight to what variety and depth there is in the world of gin today!
