6 things to do this Autumn in the Lake District

on .

No matter what the time of year there is always plenty to see and do in the Lake District. As the nights draw in and the days get crisper, here are our 6 of the best days out this Autumn:

1. An Autumn walk up Latrigg

Little Latrigg sits 1200 ft above Keswick and is somewhat in the shadow of its older big brother Skiddaw. However, a little effort up this most moderate of fells is handsomely rewarded with a wonderful summit with great views of Derwentwater, Keswick and Bassenthwaite. To find the walk, begin at the Moot Hall in Keswick. A great walk whatever the weather.

2. A trip on the L’aal Ratty steam train

Whatever your age, everyone loves a steam train. The L’aal Ratty - as it is affectionately known locally – is a narrow gauge railway which runs from pretty Ravenglass through the breath-taking valley of Eskdale to the foot of the Scafell range. Great for sight-seeing the beautiful Autumn colours or for the more adventurous to access some of the best walks in the area. www.ravenglass-railway.co.uk

3. Excellent entertainment at Theatre by the Lake, Keswick

Set in a most beautiful location for a theatre at the edge of Derwentwater, a trip to the theatre this Autumn is a great way to spend a chilly afternoon or evening. Currently showing a brilliant, fast paced and hilarious version of the classic Hitchcock thriller, The 39 Steps, which has enjoyed a long and successful run in the West End. www.theatrebythelake.com

4. Ghost hunting at Muncaster Castle

Muncaster Castle is an historic haunted Castle home to the Pennington family for 800 years set in a stunning 70- acre garden. So much happens at Muncaster Castle throughout the whole year but autumn sees its famous Halloween events for all the family from spooky illuminations to spooky mazes and face painting to ghostly tours of the castle - do you dare visit this most haunted castle this Halloween….? www.muncaster.co.uk

5. Winter Droving in Penrith

Fire, animation and music at this wonderful event celebrating the coming of winter and the areas’ rich agricultural heritage. The event includes a Cumbrian market featuring local food and drink, and high quality arts and crafts. Then as night falls the crowds will welcome a mystical masked procession with fire, music and magic. www.winterdroving.uk

6. Honister Slate Mine

Honister is the last working slate mine in England and situated just outside Keswick. There are loads of activities included fully guided mine tours and an outdoor Via Ferrata. If the weather has turned a bit damp and dismal then there is also an indoor Via Ferrata where you can get to climb up the inside of the mine. A truly exhilarating experience whatever the weather.www.honister.com
