September is here and The Pheasant will soon be transformed with beautiful orange colours outdoors and crackling fires inside to warm up autumn days. This season is one of our favourites and with it comes a host of events near our historic hotel. Plan your autumn getaway around one of these local highlights:
Taste Cumbria, Cockermouth
29 and 30 September
The county’s food event of the year is almost here and our hotel is just minutes from the mouth-watering action. Taste Cumbria is a huge culinary showcase staged in the streets and historic buildings of Cockermouth – this year’s festival includes over 80 stalls on Main Street and the hot food court in Market Place, a secret gin garden, the Jennings Brewery beer festival, a Prosecco and The Pig Picnic and live comedy at the Kirkgate Arts Centre. Our rooms are booking up fast for the weekend, so get in quick for this foodies extravaganza.
The Lakes Distillery Autumn Whisky Festival, Cockermouth
As a hotel that takes its whisky very seriously (we have over 100 malts in our bar), it’s happy coincidence that we’re close to England’s largest whisky distillery. This autumn the Lakes Distillery is staging its popular one-day whisky festival – take a tour of the site and see the whisky making process from start to finish enjoying a few drams along the way. Meet the distillery’s friendly resident alpacas in the courtyard and enjoy live music and entertainment throughout the day.
Sense & Sensibility, Theatre by the Lake Keswick
Running from 8 September to 26 October
Our pick of autumn productions at Keswick’s beautiful lakeside theatre is Jane Austen’s Sense & Sensibility. Olivier award winner Jessica Swale has adapted the book for the stage, bringing the world of the Dashwood sisters to life as they lose their inheritance and home and start again in a bleak Devonshire cottage. Lovely entertainment for an autumn evening – tuck in to a Regency-style afternoon tea at The Pheasant before taking your seats!
The Winter Droving, Penrith
For a true Cumbrian experience visit us during Winter Droving weekend - Penrith’s magical festival celebrating the towns rural heritage. The fun starts in daylight with a rustic food and crafts market in the town centre, rural games like tug of war and hay bale racing and a hilarious dog fancy dress competition. Then as night falls the evening takes a spooky turn with a torch lit procession of fire lanterns and marchers in masquerade.
For a spectacular Bonfire Night, base yourself at The Pheasant and hot foot it to Carlisle on 3 November for the city’s annual fireshow. Ranked as one of the top ten best in the country and now in its 31 st year, Carlisle’s event is held in the shadow of the historic castle on the fields of Bitts Park. The massive bonfire always has a great theme with an incredible firework display set to music. Join the 35,000 fellow revelers and then retire to The Pheasant for warming hot chocolates by the fire in our lounge.
