It's show time! What to see and do in the Lakes this summer

Lowther Castle Country Fair

Summer definitely marks the start of ‘show time’ in the Lake District. Our traditional county shows celebrate the best of the area’s food, drink and countryside heritage. From sheepdog displays and hound trails, to the ancient Cumberland & Westmorland Wrestling and Fell Running, some of Cumbria’s county shows have been running for almost 200 years and are still providing great entertainment to today’s visitors.

First up is the Cumberland Show on Saturday 15th June, located at Brisco just south of Carlisle and around a 40-minute drive from The Pheasant. Parking at the site is free or there are regular shuttle buses running from Carlisle city centre if you wanted to take in the historic sights of Cumbria’s capital city or indulge in a bit of pre-show shopping. Advance tickets are available for £11 or it costs £15 on the day. Free entry for children aged up to 16.

Next up is Lowther Show over the weekend of the 10th and 11th of August at the Lowther Castle Estate near Penrith. Around a 40-minute drive from the Pheasant, the headline event is the famous Lowther Horse Driving Trials – so exciting to watch up close and hugely popular with the crowds. There’s also a clay shooting festival, gundog events, falconry experience, and much more. Advance tickets are available for £16 or it costs £18 on the day. Free entry for children aged up to 6.

The final county show of the year is Grasmere Lakeland Sports in Grasmere on Bank Holiday Sunday 25th August. The drive south from The Pheasant on the A66 and A591 takes just half an hour and is one of the most scenic routes in the UK. Passing no less than four lakes – Bassenthwaite, Derwentwater, Thirlmere and Grasmere – it also takes in some of the Lake District’s most impressive mountain scenery including Dunmail Raise, the valley of St John’s in The Vale, and the lower slopes of Helvellyn. Advance tickets available for £11 or it costs £12 on the day. Free entry for children aged up to 5.

If you’re planning a summer stay at The Pheasant, don’t forget to book direct with us for the best price and extra special treats including £15 to spend in one of our restaurants and complimentary room upgrade where available. See you soon!
